Bensonwood Homes, America's premier designer/builder of high-performance, energy-efficient houses, and This Old House Ventures, America's premier home enthusiast brand, announce a timeless collection of signature houses: homes that reflect our shared commitment to the best of old world craft and the technological advances of the 21st century.

These are the hallmarks of the Bensonwood This Old House Collection. The inaugural four homes in our Collection range in size from 1,500 SF to 2,300 SF. All homes share:

• Craftsman-style pitched, gabled rooflines and deeply overhanging eaves with exposed rafters and brackets
• Classic timber features that lend a clean, beautiful and timeless aesthetic

• Handcrafted woodwork and wainscoting, a high level of finish and coordinated millwork that demonstrate an artisan's attention to detail
• Deep front porches and welcoming front entrances
• Open, spacious plans with close attention to individual lifestyle and intelligent functionality
• Choice of exterior trim options and roofing upgrades

• A well-insulated, extremely tight building envelope resulting in thermal efficiencies and reduced fuel costs
• Option for non-timbered interior
• Optional packages for radiant heat, alternate energy sources, standby generators, and sprinkler systems

This Old House TV viewers marveled at the in-shop construction and dramatic on-site assembly of the custom Bensonwood home, built for the Favat family during the 2008 Fall season.

At the heart of that process was Bensonwood's exclusive Open-Built® technology, a unique computer-based design and fabrication system that greatly reduces waste, improves energy efficiency, shortens on-site construction time, and increases homeowner value.

Project managers coordinate every phase of production, while artisans work in Bensonwood's state-of-the-art production facilities to fabricate the construction elements. Using 3D computer modeling, they standardize organizational and mechanical systems for greater flexibility and ease of replacement and repair. Components are machined by computer-controlled equipment to such exacting standards that they can be shipped to your job site with windows preinstalled, and interior wallboard and wainscoting already in place. These prefinished elements are then efficiently assembled on your site, the infill and finishes are completed, and your home is ready for moving day.

The term "green" in homebuilding means many things to many people, but by any measure, the Bensonwood This Old House Collection not only defines the term—it raises the bar. Our energy-efficient, Open-Built® homes are highly livable, durable, and adaptable to their owners' changing needs over time.

From start to completed house, Bensonwood efficiencies in CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) design, fabrication, and precise on-site assembly virtually eliminate the waste typically found in conventional construction. From there, our well-insulated, extremely-tight building envelopes continue to conserve resources by reducing the energy load of the building. The lowered heating and cooling requirements result in lower operational costs each and every year you own your home. In fact, Bensonwood's exclusive, panelized homes typically heat and cool for a fraction of the cost of their stick-built counterparts. That's why, with a Bensonwood This Old House Collection home, "sustainability" means more than simply the green products it's made of and the efficiencies of fabrication—it refers to affordable, sustainable, operational costs for you and your family.

And further down the road, as your family grows and needs change, the disentangled layers of your Open-Built house (where mechanical systems are separated from the building envelope), allow for alteration and modification, without the enormous waste and expense normally associated with home renovation.

Finally, when it comes to old world craftsmanship and durability, Bensonwood homes are measured in centuries, not decades—the ultimate in "green" strategies. This is why Tedd Benson, the founder and company steward of Bensonwood, was invited to speak at the prestigious Greenbuild 2008 conference in Boston, along with Kevin O'Connor, host of PBS's This Old House. Thousands learned the true meaning of sustainable building from a maverick for whom "green" has always been a natural by-product of building better homes.
